Most businesses approach SEO completely backwards. They build a website, write some content, and then wonder why no one is visiting. The problem? They never figured out what their customers are actually searching for.

Keyword research is the foundation of everything in SEO. Get it right and every piece of content you create has a real chance of ranking. Get it wrong and you’re just writing into the void. This guide will show you how to do it properly — using free tools — in under an hour.

Not All Keywords Are Created Equal

Before you start researching, you need to understand the two main types of keywords — because targeting the wrong type is the most common mistake businesses make.

Hard to Rank

Short-tail Keywords

“SEO”
  • 1–2 words, very broad
  • Millions of searches per month
  • Dominated by huge international sites
  • Vague intent — hard to convert
  • Takes years to rank for
VS
Easy to Rank ✓

Long-tail Keywords

“affordable SEO agency in Lahore”
  • 3–6 words, very specific
  • Lower search volume but highly targeted
  • Less competition — local businesses can rank
  • Clear intent — ready to buy or hire
  • Can rank in weeks to months

A Pakistani business ranking #1 for “digital marketing agency Karachi” will get far more relevant customers than ranking #50 for “digital marketing.” Always go specific first.

Step by Step

How to Do Keyword Research in 1 Hour

Follow this exact process and walk away with a solid list of keywords to target this month.

01

Brainstorm Seed Keywords (10 min)

Write down 5–10 words that describe what you do and what your customers might search for. If you’re a photographer in Islamabad, seeds might be: “photographer,” “wedding photography,” “product photography,” “photo studio Islamabad.” These are your starting points.

02

Expand with Free Tools (20 min)

Put each seed keyword into Google Keyword Planner and Ubersuggest. Look for long-tail variations that include your city name, specific services, or problem-based phrases. Save every relevant keyword in a simple spreadsheet with its monthly search volume.

03

Check the Competition (15 min)

For your top keywords, Google them and look at the first page results. Are they huge international websites or local businesses like yours? If local businesses are ranking, you can too. If it’s all Wikipedia and Forbes — that keyword is too competitive for now. Skip it and find an easier one.

04

Pick Your Top 10 Target Keywords (15 min)

From your list, choose 10 keywords that have decent search volume, low-to-medium competition, and are directly relevant to what you offer. Assign each keyword to a specific page on your website — one keyword per page. Now you have your SEO roadmap for the next 3 months.

3 Pro Tips for Pakistani Businesses

1
Always add your city name. “Web designer” is impossible to rank for. “Web designer in Faisalabad” is very achievable. Location keywords are your biggest competitive advantage as a local business.
2
Target Urdu search terms too. Millions of Pakistanis search in Urdu. If your competitors aren’t targeting Urdu keywords, this is a completely open field for you to dominate.
3
Update your keyword list every 3 months. Search trends change. New opportunities appear. Businesses that review their keyword strategy regularly always stay ahead of competitors who set it and forget it.
